As winter gives way

For a dog there is no bad day. All weather is a curiosity and a joy. Today there's deep snow for forging trenches and leaping and rolling; tomorrow offers ice, with hilarious skidding and body slams; another day, rain with its miraculous pools; sun brings tall weeds and delicious spring-grass salads. Dog companionship gets me out when I would have stayed in, and I see a world I might have missed. Here are a few pix of small Ellison miracles: trees with icy tutus as the flooding recedes and a little twig calligraphy when the sun hardens a soft snow.

My favorite Ellison Bark miracle is watching the creek rise and recede. It can rise to such astounding heights and is often filled with ducks and geese squawking and carrying on in their merry dialogue. Sometimes, if you're lucky, you can witness the ducks engage in the miracle of life (wink-wink, nudge-nudge). I often think in the back of my mind: "Can this place get flooded out?" only to return in a few days to find a completely quiet, well-behaved creek.

My favorite times to visit is when there is a light mist, threatening rain. Everything seems so much greener, more fragrant and vibrant. It is usually quiet during those times, aside from a fellow-insane dog walker, but there is plenty of time to reflect and to enjoy life.
